Alfa Romeo has been providing their sport-oriented vehicles to drivers across the world since 1910. Since then, there have been hundreds of vehicles that have made a name for themselves. One worth mentioning is the 1952 Disco Volante — one of Alfa Romeo’s greatest classics throughout history.

The design of Disco Volante had bulging wings over the wheels, which made it almost look like a spaceship and gave it the name of “flying saucer.” This “flying saucer” was produced between 1952 and 1953 as part of a series of experimental sports racing cars. In fact, this pioneering automobile was created after the United States' distributors requested an Alfa Barchetta sports car. With it originally being designed to compete in sports racing, it was developed in a wind tunnel to achieve low drag in the crosswinds.

The dream team behind the design? Alfa Romeo and Touring of Milan – two design powerhouses. To this day, many Alfa Romeo enthusiasts can agree that the exterior of the Disco Volante was one of the most striking and memorable attributes of the vehicle. During the time period, the bodywork of this automobile was very uncommon due to its rounded fenders, convex tail, and low-slung profile. And when it came to speed? The Disco Volante could reach a top speed of 140 mph thanks to its aerodynamic shape. This power came from the 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine and their chain-driven overhead camshafts.

While the success of the Disco Volante racing status never progressed further than the prototype stage, aficionados everywhere can appreciate the legacy it left behind.
